Born on 27 December 1893 in Almonte, Ontario - son of Mary McLean, Almonte, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in Almonte, Ontario; trade as chauffeur; single; no current or previous military service; Presbyterian; height of 5 feet 5 inches; chest of 36.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; light hair.

Joined the 73rd Battalion, CEF, in Montreal, Quebec, on 8 December 1915 (number 133230) - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 20 April 1917 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 3 May 1919.
