Born on 3 September 1896 in Belleville, Ontario - son of Richard Stapley, Station Post Office, Belleville, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1917: present address in Belleville, Ontario; trade as railway brakeman; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 5.5 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; auburn complexion; blue eyes; red hair.

Joined the 1st Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment, CEF, in Belleville, Ontario, on 4 July 1917 (number 2584305) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 11 or 12 April 1918 - wounded on 10 August 1918 - invalided to England on 21 August 1918.
