Born on 10 February 1895 in Oxford, Ontario - son of Annie Hurlbert, Kemptville, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Kemptville, Ontario, trade as labourer, single, no current or previous military service, Methodist, height of 5 feet 4 inches, chest of 36 inches fully expanded, medium complexion, blue eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 156th Battalion, CEF, in Kemptville, Ontario, on 12 February 1916 (number 639590) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 24 May 1917 - transferred to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, CEF, on 1 May 1918.
