Born on 22 April 1898 in Milltown, Maine - son of William Irving, Milltown, Maine - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in St. Stephen, New Brunswick; trade as house painter; single; no current or previous military service; Baptist / Congregationalist; height of 5 feet 4 inches; chest of 33 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; dark eyes; dark brown hair.

Joined the 97th Battalion, CEF, in Saint John, New Brunswick, on 12 June 1916 (number 1033019) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 1 or 2 February 1918 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 5 May 1919.
