Born on 12 July 1896 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - next of kin listed as Thomas Sanderson, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as student; single; currently a member of the Active Militia (no details); no previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 35.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; dark brown hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Guelph, Ontario, on 5 April 1915 (number 411112) - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, CEF, on 16 July 1915 - wounded on 16 or 17 July 1916.
