Born on 12 July 1898 in Lindsay, Ontario - son of William Hargrove, Lindsay, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Lindsay, Ontario, trade as labourer, single, no current or previous military service, Roman Catholic, height of 5 feet 6 inches, chest of 33 inches fully expanded, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair.

Joined the 109th Battalion, CEF, in Lindsay, Ontario, on 31 January 1916 (number 725199) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 4 or 6 December 1916 - wounded on 9 or 12 April 1917 - invalided to England on 17 April 1917.
