Born on 21 September 1896 in Aultsville, Ontario - son of Charles S. and Susan Ella (née Pollock) Hanes, Aultsville, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Aultsville, Ontario, trade as tinsmith, single, currently a member of the 59th Regiment's canal patrol (four months), no previous military service, Methodist, height of 5 feet 9 inches, chest of 37 inches fully expanded, light complexion, brown eyes, light brown hair.
Joined the 154th Battalion, CEF, in Morrisburg, Ontario, on 11 April 1916 (number 634025) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 24 May 1917 - wounded on 20 April 1918 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 12 May 1918 - wounded on 27 September 1918 and died of his wounds that day - buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery (grave II.F.29), France.
