Born on 25 October 1886 in American Fork, Utah - husband of Florence T. Mercer, Magrath, Alberta - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Magrath, Alberta; trade as school teacher; married; no current or previous military service; Latter Day Saint; height of 5 feet 6.5 inches; chest of 37 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; brown eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 13th Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles, CEF, in Magrath, Alberta, on 4 April 1916 (number 552988) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 18 or 29 April 1917 - wounded on 29 or 30 June 1917 - invalided to England on 4 July 1917.

parents were John Mercer and Nancy ann wilson both born in England
