Born on 26 October 1897 in County Wright [?] - son of Mrs. Mary Ann Merrifield, Beachgrove, Quebec - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Beachgrove, Quebec; trade as laborer; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 7.5 inches; chest of 34 inches fullu expanded; weight of 132 pounds; fair complexion; blue eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 130th Battalion, CEF, in Arnprior, Ontario, on 26 January 1916 (number 788276) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 14 or 15 November 1916 - wounded on 2 or 3 September 1918 - invalided to England on 6 September 1918.
