Born on 12 October 1896 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba - son of Lydia J. Miller, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba - at the time of his enlistment in 1917: present address in Toronto, Ontario; trade as veterinary student; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 7 inches; chest of 37.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; grey eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 75th Depot Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF, in Kingston, Ontario, on 1 March 1917 (number 345934) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 11 July 1917 - transferred to the Headquarters, 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade, CEF, on 17 or 18 November 1917 - transferred to the Headquarters, 4th Canadian Division, on 2 May 1918.
