Born on 16 July 1897 in Port Hope, Ontario - son of Georgina A. Smart, Port Hope, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Port Hope, Ontario; trade as student; single; no current military service; previously served with the cadets (two years) and the militia (one year); Church of England; height of 5 feet 3.75 inches; chest of 32 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; dark and brown hair.

Joined the 136th Battalion, CEF, in Port Hope, Ontario, on 17 February 1916 (number 805356) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 5 or 6 June 1917 - transferred to the 4th Divisional Signal Company, CEF, on 24 March or 23 April 1918 - later promoted to lance-corporal.
