Born on 19 November 1893 in Saint John, New Brunswick - son of George Simpson, Edmonton, Alberta - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Edmonton, Alberta; trade as electrician; single; no current military service; previously served with the 18th Infantry, US Army (three years); Baptist; height of 5 feet 11.5 inches; chest of 38 inches fully expanded; weight of 175 pounds; fair complexion; blue eyes; dark auburn hair.

Joined the 240th Battalion, CEF, in Renfrew, Ontario, on 4 November 1916 (number 1042436) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 10 or 11 November 1917 - wounded on 23 or 24 March 1918 - invalided to England on 30 March 1918.
