Born on 11 January 1894 in Bergen, Norway - son of Mrs. Bertha Slotten, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; trade as lumberman; single; no current or previous military service; Lutheran; height of 5 feet 1 inch; chest of 33.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair.

Joined the 212th Battalion, CEF, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on 8 July 1916 (number 261617) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 21 or 22 March 1917 - wounded at duty on 26 May 1917 - wounded at duty on 26 June 1917 - wounded on 30 October 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 26 March 1918 - invalided sick to England on 25 September 1918.
