Born on 15 May 1893 in Telling, Durham, England - next of kin listed as Robert Purdy, Houghton, England - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as sales clerk; single; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 9 inches; chest of 36.25 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Montreal, Quebec, on 17 March 1915 (number 410979) - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, CEF, on 17 July 1915 - promoted to staff-sergeant.
