Born on 28 May 1888 in Hamilton, Ontario - half-brother of William Watts, Hamilton, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Toronto, Ontario; trade as clerk; single; no current military service; previously served with the 13th Royal Hamilton Infantry (five years); Presbyterian; height of 5 feet 9 inches; chest of 36.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; grey eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 34th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF, in Toronto, Ontario, on 18 January 1916 (number 310760) - transferred to the 14th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF - transferred to the 53rd Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF - transferred to the 75th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 11 or 12 July 1917 - wounded on 12 August 1918 - invalided to England on 14 August 1918.
