Private John Austin Loy

Born on 12 May 1894 in Valleyfield, Quebec - next of kin listed as Mrs. Geo. A. Loy, Ottawa, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as student; single; currently a member of the 23rd Field Battery (four years); no previous military service; Presbyterian; height of 5 feet 9.5 inches; chest of 37 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; brown eyes; black hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Montreal, Quebec, on 18 February 1915 (number 410909) - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on 17 July 1915 - transferred to the 3rd Divisional Trench Mortar Battery, CEF, on 26 August 1916 - at some point commissioned and promoted to Acting Captain.

Awarded the Military Cross.

Austin Loy was my mother's first cousin. When he died in Victoria on May 30, 1995, he was the last surviving Patricia of World War 1. The Patricias honoured him accordingly.
