Born on 17 February 1894 in London, Ontario - next of kin listed as Mary Francis Jones, London, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as student at the Ontario Agricultural College; single; currently a member of the Guelph Canadian Officers' Training Corps; no previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 7.5 inches; chest of 36 inches fully expanded; blue eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Guelph, Ontario, on 16 March 1915 (number 411032) - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on 17 July 1915 - transferred to 4th Battalion, CEF, on 8 July 1916 - wounded on 21 September 1916 - wounded on 8 or 9 October 1916 - at some point was commissioned as a lieutenant.
