Born on 19 August 1895 in Kingston, Ontario - son of John Hughes, Kingston Mills, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1917: present address in Kingston Mills, Ontario, trade as farming, single, no current military service, previously served with the 5th Field Company, Canadian Engineers (one year), Methodist, height of 5 feet 11 inches, chest of 35 inches fully expanded, dark complexion, brown eyes, brown hair.

Joined the Signals Training Depot, Canadian Engineers, CEF, in Barriefield, Ontario, on 30 June 1917 (number 2265942) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 12 or 13 September 1918 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 16 June 1919.
