Charles Henry Holmes was the first husband of my grandmother, Isobel Dalton Holmes who later married Herman Kirschner, I believe in Canada. Charles and sometimes recorded as Isabella or Isabelle had 4 children together: Josephine, Charles Henry both born in Accrington, James born in Pawtucket,Rhode island and Irene who was born in Canada in 1914. Charles immigrated to the US in 1909 and his wife joined him with their 2 children Josephine and Charles travelling on the steamship Ivernia from Liverpool and arrived in Boston March 10,1910. Her destination listed was Pawtucket, RI. They worked it is believed in Slatters Mill in Pawtucket until the outbreak of WWI when as a British citizen he traveled to Canada to enlist. He died from mustard gas poisoning in a soldiers home. Don't know where he served during WWI but do know that Isabelle received a widower's pension. Isobel as it was recorded lived at 12575 De La Roche St. Amherst Park, Montreal, Canada
at the time of his death, April 19, 1917 with their four children:
Josephine Holmes born 1906 in Accrington England
Charles Henry Holmes born 1909 Accrington England, James Holmes born 1910 Pawtucket, R.I. and Irene Holmes born 1914 Canada. My mother Dorothy Dalton Kirschner was born in Canada on Nov 24, 1921. Herman Kirschner, her father and second husband of Isabelle, was a Linotype operator for the Quebec Telegraph, he was born in Pennsylvania. Isabelle listed her mother as the person to contact on the passenger manifest of the Ivernia, her name was Anne Catterall of 21 Castle St. Accrington. I have pictures of Charles Henry in his uniform and of Isabelle and 4 of their children. Would love to learn more about Charles Henry Holmes as I am compiling a family book

Thanks for the information on Pte Holmes and his family. Unfortunately, I don't have any additional information on hand. Have you ordered a copy of his military service record? You can do it from this link: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=465132&interval=20&&PHPSESSID=6toaf92shu85oss03qdin6bv63
