Born on 22 November 1888 in Aso Township, Ontario - son of Sam Kiell, Sharbot Lake, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in Sharbot Lake, Ontario; trade as labourer; single; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 8.5 inches; chest of 40 inches gully expanded; medium dark complexion; brown eyes; dark hair.

Joined the 146th Battalion, CEF, in Sharbot Lake, Ontario, on 3 December 1915 (number 835104); taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 24 May 1917 - wounded on 30 October 1917 - invalided to England on 5 November 1917.
