Born on 3 August 1893 in Campbells Bay, Quebec - son of Mrs. S.W. Smith, Campbells Bay, Quebec - at the time of his conscription in 1918: present address in Campbells Bay, Quebec; single; Presbyterian; no current or previous military service; height of 5 feet 3.5 inches; chest of 36.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.

Conscripted into the 2nd Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 14 January 1918 (number 3320398) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 10 or 11 June 1918 - invalided sick to England on 31 March 1919.
