Born on 30 March 1897 in Peterborough, Ontario - son of Walter O. Souch, Bowmanville, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Bowmanville, Ontario; trade as druggist; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 5.5 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair.

Joined the 136th Battalion, CEF, in Bowmanville, Ontario, on 16 February 1916 (number 805375) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 5 or 6 June 1917 - transferred to the Canadian Signals Pool, CEF, or 4th Divisional Signal Company, CEF, on 24 March 1918 - promoted to corporal.
