Born on 2 February 1894 in Manchester, England - nephew of Mrs. Mark Wood, [?] - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in St. Columban, Ontario; trade as labourer; single; no current or previous military service; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 34.25 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 161st Battalion, CEF, in Seaforth, Ontario, on 17 December 1915 (number 654143 or 65443) - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 29 December 1916 - invalided sick to England on 4 September 1918.

Awarded a Mention in Despatches - no official citation - unit recommendation date unknown (announced 28 December 1917): "For valuable services rendered."
