Private Alfred James Whitnall

Born on 15 August 1890 in Shidleigh, Northumberland, England - brother of Albert Charles Whitnall, 4th Hussars, British cavalry - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in Gananoque, Ontario; trade as cheesemaker; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 7 inches; chest of 36.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair.

Joined the 156th Battalion, CEF, in Brockville, Ontario, on 20 December 1915 (number 639364) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 24 May 1917 - wounded on 30 or 31 October 1917 - invalided to England on 12 November 1917.
