Born on 30 October 1897 in Chelsea, Quebec - brother of Bertha Brown, Cardinal, Ontario - enlistment records provide the following: present address in Cardinal, Ontario, trade as fireman, single, no current military service, previously served in "The Home Guard", Presbyterian, height of 5 feet 8 inches, chest of 35.75 inches fully expanded, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair.

Joined the 156th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Brockville, Ontario, on 25 April 1916 (number 640109) - taken on the strength of the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion in France on 28 July 1917 - wounded on 31 October or 1 November 1917 - invalided to England on 8 November 1917 - served with the 3rd Labour Battalion from 9 February to 27 July 1917.
