Born on 11 February 1869 in Mary Cray, Kent, England - husband of Mabel Brown, Notre Dame de Grace, Quebec - enlistment records provide the following: trade as cook, married, no current military service, previously served with the East Surrey Regiment for nineteen years, Church of England, height of 5 feet 7.25 inches, chest of 34.8 inches fully expanded, dark brown complexion, brown eyes, black hair.

Joined the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Montreal, Quebec, on 29 March 1915 (number 411021) - taken on the strength of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in France on 23 August 1915.
