Born on 25 May 1879 in Dundee, Scotland - nephew of Jane Stachan, Dundee, Scotland - at the time of his enlistment in 1918: present address in Boston, Massachusetts; trade as painter; single; no current or previous military service; Presbyterian; height of 5 feet 5.5 inches; chest of 38.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 249th Battalion, CEF, in Quebec, Quebec, on 3 January 1918 (number 1069914) - taken on the strength of the 28th Battalion, CEF, on 5 September 1918 - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 21 or 22 September 1918 - wounded on 1 October 1918 - invalided to England on 3 October 1918.
