Born on 20 March 1898 in Jayville, New York - son of Joe Roberts, Watertown, New York - at the time of his enlistment in 1917: present address in Kingston, Ontario; trade as labourer; single; no current or previous military service; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; brown eyes; light hair.

Joined the 253rd Battalion, CEF, in Kingston, Ontario, on 17 March 1917 (number 2157465) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 8 or 9 April 1918 - wounded on 1 September 1918 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 12 September 1918 - wounded on 28 September 1918 - invalided to England on 2 October 1918.
