Born on 14 March 1894 in Maynooth, Ontario - son of Mrs. Richard Payne, Whitney, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Whitney, Ontario; trade as engineer; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 11 inches; chest of 34 inches fully expanded; ruddy complexion; gray eyes; black hair.

Joined the 240th Battalion, CEF, in Renfrew, Ontario, on 15 August 1916 (number 1042081) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 29 or 30 November 1917 - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on 7 December 1917 - transferred to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, CEF, on 13 May 1918.
