Joined the 212th Battalion, CEF, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on 14 April 1916 (number 261219) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 16 or 17 February 1917 - transferred to the 4th Divisional Signal Company, CEF, on 22 August 1917.
