Born on 15 April 1899 in Brighton, Ontario - son of Adolpha Chapman, Brighton, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Brighton, Ontario; trade as student; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 9.5 inches; chest of 34 inches fully expanded; medium complexion; brown eyes; brown hair.

Joined the No.2 Overseas Army Service Corps Training Depot, CEF, in Brighton, Ontario, on 21 November 1916 (number 2003538) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 11 or 12 July 1917 - struck off strength to England as a "minor" on 21 September 1917 - later served as a RAF Cadet - promoted to acting-sergeant.
