Born on 14 June 1900 in Gravenhurst, Ontario - son of Martha McEdwards, Gravenhurst, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Gravenhurst, Ontario; trade as farmer; single; no current or previous military service; Presbyterian; height of 5 feet 8 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair.

Joined the 122nd Battalion, CEF, in Gravenhurst, Ontario, on 1 May 1916 (number 763650) - taken on the strength of the Canadian Forestry Corps, CEF, on 27 or 28 June 1917 - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 6 or 7 October 1918 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 19 January 1919.
