Born on 14 February 1898 in Hastings County, Ontario - son of Emma Nobbs, Turriff, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Turriff, Ontario; trade as labourer; married; no current or previous military service; Bretheren (other denomination); height of 5 feet 6.5 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; brown eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 155th Battalion, CEF, in Bancroft, Ontario, on 10 April 1916 (number 637049) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 24 May 1917 - invalided sick to England on 18 August 1918.
