Joined the 159th Battalion, CEF, in South Porcupine, Ontario, on 18 May 1916 (number 649370) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 26 or 27 June 1917 - transferred to the 4th Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps, CEF, on 1 May 1918.
