Born on 7 December 1895 in Shanaritz, Russia - son of Joe Ligs, Shanaritz, Russia - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Smiths Falls, Ontario; trade as farming; single; no current or previous military service; Jewish; height of 5 feet 7.75 inches; chest of 38 inches fully expanded; weight of 160 pounds; dark complexion; brown eyes; dark brown hair.

Joined the 130th Battalion, CEF, in Smiths Falls, Ontario, on 10 March 1916 (number 787408) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 14 or 15 November 1916 - wounded on 27 or 28 March 1918 - transferred to the Canadian Forestry Corps, CEF, on 30 May 1918.
