Born on 24 January 1892 in Dutton, Ontario - son of Mrs. Sarah Hicks, Dutton, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in Dutton, Ontario, trade as miller, single, no current or previous military service, Church of England, height of 5 feet 5.5 inches, chest of 33.5 inches fully expanded, medium complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair.

Joined the 91st Battalion, CEF, in St. Thomas, Ontario, on 16 December 1915 (number 189771) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 20 or 21 August 1916 - wounded on 10 February 1917 - invalided to England on 25 February 1917.
