Born on 6 September 1874 in Tumbridge Wells, Kent, England - son of Alice Hayward, Tumbridge Wells, Kent, England - next of kin listed as Rose Farley, Bromley, Kent, England - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as butcher, widower, no current or previous military service (sailing list notes previously served with the Territorials), Church of England, height of 5 feet 4 inches, chest of 34 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: previous military services with the 1st Kent Regiment (four months as a Private).

Joined the 59th Battalion, CEF, on 4 June 1915 - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 22 June 1915 (number 410765) - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 25 May 1916 - joined the 1st Construction Battalion, CEF, in Toronto, Ontario, on 9 June 1916 - [then what?] - joined the 238th Battalion, CEF, in Toronto, Ontario, on 9 August 1916 (number 1036512) - transferred to the Canadian Forestry Corps on 21 April 1917.
