Born on 2 April 1899 (stated 1897 on enlistment form) in Lindsay, Ontario - son of Albert Edgar Wells, Ashburn, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in Toronto, Ontario; trade as butcher; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 33 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; blue eyes; black hair.

Joined the 109th Battalion, CEF, in Lindsay, Ontario, on 2 December 1915 (number 724642) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 4 or 6 December 1916 - invalided sick to England on 9 September 1917.
