Born on 26 December 1887 in London, England - friend of William Waters, Carleton Place, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as farmer; single; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 3.5 inches; chest of 37.5 inches fully expanded; weight of 130 pounds; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 130th Battalion, CEF, in Smiths Falls, Ontario, on 23 October 1915 (number 787320) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 14 or 15 November 1916 - wounded on 9 April 1917 - invalided to England on 14 April 1917 - later served with reserve units and promoted to lance-corporal.
