Born on 8 December 1880 in Port Elgin, Ontario - son of William E. Mitchell, Victoria, British Columbia - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address same as father; trade as machinist; single; no current military service; previously served with The Royal Canadian Regiment (three years), The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada (three years) and the 48th Highlanders of Canada (three years); Presbyterian; height of 5 feet 4.5 inches; chest of 37.5 inches fully expanded; weight of 155 pounds; fair complexion; grey eyes; dark brown hair.

Joined the 240th Battalion, CEF, in Renfrew, Ontario, on 8 November 1916 (number 1042435) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 11 or 12 July 1917 - wounded on 30 October 1917 - invalided to England on 5 November 1917.
