Born on 23 September 1897 in Toronto, Ontario - son of George Shields, Toronto, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1917: present address in Chicago, Illinois; trade as salesman; single; no current or previous military service; religious denomination "C.S."; height of 5 feet 5.5 inches; chest of 37 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 1st Depot Battalion, 2nd Central Ontario Regiment, CEF, in Toronto, Ontario, on 21 August 1917 (numbered 3030130) - taken on the strength of the 58th Battalion, CEF, on 7 or 8 April 1918 - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 12 or 13 April 1918 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 16 June 1919.
