Lance-Corporal Edward Alexander Howey, MM

Born on 8 July 1898 in Holland Township, Grey County, Ontario - son of Robert and Margaret Howey, Chatsworth, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Chatsworth, Ontario, trade as farmer, single, no current or previous military service, Baptist or Congregationalist, height of 5 feet 8.5 inches, chest of 38 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, brown eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 147th Battalion, CEF, in Camp Borden, Ontario, on 15 September 1916 (number 839148) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 26 or 27 June 1917 - wounded on 4 February 1918 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 5 February 1918 - killed in action on 24 March 1918 - buried in Aix-Noulette Communal Cemetery Extension (grave II.D.13), France.

Awarded the Military Medal - no official citation - unit recommendation dated 6 February 1918: "On night Feb. 3/18 an enemy T.M. shell fell in a trench where this man was a member of a M.G. Crew. Five of the crew were wounded but Pte. Howey, although suffering from concussion, assisted in removing the wounded and then carried on the rest of the night."
