Private William John Cowan, MM

Born on 4 May 1892 in Centreview, Ontario - son of Mrs. Jennie Cowan, Centreview, Ontario - at time of enlistment in 1915: trade as farmer, single, no current or previous military service, Church of England, height of 5 feet 8 inches, weight of 158 pounds, chest of 35.5 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, brown eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 130th Battalion, CEF, in Arnprior, Ontario, on 23 November 1915 (number 788219) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 14 or 15 November 1916 - wounded on 12 August 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 26 September 1917 - invalided sick to England on 30 March 1919.

Awarded the Military Medal - no citation - unit recommendation dated 7 September 1918: "For gallant services in dressing the wounded in Scarpe Operations, Sept 1st and 2nd 1918."
