Born on 2 December 1886 in Kingston on Thames, England - son of Isabella Atkins, Kingston on Thames, England - attestation form notes current address in Toronto, Ontario, trade as butcher, single, not now nor previously a member of the military, height of 5 feet 2 inches, chest of 36.5 inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair, Church of England.

Joined the 166th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 26 January 1916 (number 669008) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion in France on 27 November or 1 December 1916 - struck off the strength of the battalion on 6 June 1919.

Awarded the Military Medal - no citation - unit recommendation (undated): "For bravery in the Field."

Recommended for an unnamed decoration, likely a Military Medal - no award - unit recommendation 17 April 1917: "For gallant conduct during operations Apr. 9th 1917."
