Born on 5 May 1896 in Southampton, England - son of Robert Appleyard, London, England - attestation paper notes trade as baker, single, not now nor previously a member of the military, height of 5 feet 5 inches, chest of 35 inches, dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, Church of England.
Joined the 38th Battalion as an other rank on 27 March 1915 (number 410442) - served with the battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the battalion on 13 August 1916 - wounded on 18 November 1916 - invalided to England on 24 November 1916 - rejoined the 38th Battalion in France on 14 April 1918 - seconded on a staff appointment as a Lewis Gun Instructor with the Canadian Corps Lewis Gun School from 3 June 1918 to 7 January 1919 - sent to England on 28 January 1919.
