Lance-Corporal Joseph William Charman

Born on 29 October 1880 in Seven Oaks, Kent, England - son of Joseph William Charman, London, England - enlistment records provide the following: trade as labouring, single, no current military service, previously served twelve years with the Scots Greys and 2nd Dragoons, Church of England, height of 5 feet 7.75 inches, chest of 39 inches fully expanded, medium complexion, grey eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 77th Battalion, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 21 December 1915 (number 145719) - departed Canada for overseas on 19 June 1916 - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, in England as a lance-corporal on 6 July 1916 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - taken on the strength of the Canadian Engineers on 20 April 1917 - returned to Canada on 16 April 1919.
