Born on 10 June 1889 in Montreal West, Quebec - son of Alexander Peden Sr., Montreal West, Quebec - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as civil engineer; single; currently a member of the McGill COTC (since September 1912); no previous military service; Wesleyan; height of 5 feet 10 inches; chest of 35.5 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; brown eyes; dark brown hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Montreal, Quebec, on 13 March 1915 (number 410961) - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on 17 July 1915 - at some point commissioned as a lieutenant - appointed an Assistant Instructor [with?] from 12 February to 6 November 1918 - transferred to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, CEF, on 7 November 1918.
