Joined the 109th Battalion, CEF, in Lindsay, Ontario, on 20 January 1916 (number 725178) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 4 or 6 December 1916 - invalided sick to England on 25 February 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 5 July 1917 - wounded on 1 November 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 28 November 1917 - wounded on 10 August 1918 - invalided to England on 16 August 1918.
