Born on 15 February 1889 in Ottawa, Ontario - husband of Alberta (Bertie) McPhail, Meaford, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Meaford, Ontario; trade as barker; married; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 7 inches; chest of 37 inches fully expanded; medium complexion; brown eyes; black hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 15 March 1915 (number 410288) - [then] - joined the 130th Battalion, CEF, in Arnprior, Ontario on 1 December 1915 (number 788246) - discharged at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 22 September 1916 and classified as a "deserter" - joined the 207th Battalion, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 2 September 1916 (number 788246) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 18 or 19 January 1918 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 16 June 1919.
