Private Clarence Connolly

Born on 12 September 1894 in San Francisco, California - brother of Mrs. Annie Swanson, Edmonton, Alberta - friend of Miss Violet Gagnon, Haileybury, Ontario - at time of enlistment in 1915: trade as baker, single, no current military service, previously served in the military, Church of England, chest of 38.5 inches fully expanded, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 25 March 1915 (number 410059) - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - wounded on 30 October 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 14 December 1917 - wounded on 2 or 4 November 1918 - invalided to England on 7 November 1918.

Recommended for an unnamed decoration by the 38th Battalion dated 19 March 1918: "During enemy raid Mar. 16/18, when a bomb fell in a post in which this man was in charge, he picked up the bomb and threw it over the parapet before it could explode. Throughout the affair he displayed the best soldierly quality of coolness, determination and pluck."
